Who it suits

Before you book anything, a surgeon at an accredited hospital reviews your records to confirm it's safe to travel.

Usually a good fit

  • A slipped vertebra (spondylolisthesis) causing leg pain or an unstable spine.
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) that hasn't improved with other treatment.
  • Worn discs causing repeated problems and long-term pain.
  • Some cases where earlier back surgery hasn't worked.

Wait, or get care at home

  • Any infection in the spine or the blood.
  • Severe thinning of the bones that needs treating first.
  • Back pain that scans don't explain. Fusion may not help.

Risks

What can go wrong, and what helps

Every operation has risks, wherever it's done. These are the main ones. Your surgeon will explain how they apply to you.

The main risks

  • Blood clots

In the leg (DVT) or, rarely, the lungs. Long flights add to the risk, which is why plans allow about three weeks before flying.

  • Infection

In the wound or, more seriously, around the implant. It can show up after you're home, so know the warning signs.

  • Stiffness or ongoing pain

Some people don't get the movement or comfort they hoped for. Physio makes a real difference.

  • Implant problems

Loosening, wear or dislocation (hips), sometimes years later, which may need further surgery.

  • Nerve or blood vessel injury

Rare, but possible with any joint or spine operation.

What a planned trip does about travel

  • A written opinion first. A surgeon reviews your reports before you book anything, and can say no.
  • Time to recover before flying. Plans include days in India after discharge, and you only fly with your surgeon's fit-to-fly letter.
  • Clot prevention for the flight. Your surgeon advises on stockings, medicines and moving around. We can book aisle seats and wheelchair help.
  • Records your doctor can use. Discharge summary, scans, operation notes and implant details in English, before you leave.
  • Follow-up from home. Video check-ups with your surgeon, and a named person to call if something worries you.

Questions to ask your surgeon

  1. 1.How many of these operations do you do a year?
  2. 2.Which implant will you use, and why?
  3. 3.What's your plan to prevent blood clots, including for the flight?
  4. 4.When can I fly, and what should I do on the plane?
  5. 5.What would make you delay my operation?

Technique & technology

How it's done

What you can expect at large accredited hospitals in Delhi NCR. Your surgeon will explain which approach suits you.

01

Nerve monitoring during surgery

Many spine teams monitor your nerves during the operation to help avoid damaging them.

02

Imaging-guided screws

Some hospitals use 3D imaging in theatre (such as an O-arm) to guide where screws go.

03

Smaller-incision surgery, where it suits

For some patients the fusion can be done through smaller cuts, which may mean less pain afterwards. Your surgeon decides.

Questions

Questions about spinal fusion surgery

Is it done by an orthopaedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon?

Either. At large hospitals, spine surgery is done by orthopaedic surgeons or neurosurgeons who specialise in the spine. Your quote names the surgeon.

When can I sit and walk?

Most people sit up and walk a little with a brace within a day or two, and walk short distances on their own before leaving hospital.

Will my doctor at home know what was done?

Yes. You leave with your scans, the operation notes and the make and serial numbers of the implants, all in English.

Planning this from abroad?

Prices are planning ranges from published hospital packages and cost research (2025–26), not quotes. Day plans are typical; your surgeon sets the real dates. General information, not medical advice. Last reviewed October 2026.
