Is this right for you?
Who it suits
Before you book anything, a surgeon at an accredited hospital reviews your records to confirm it's safe to travel.
Usually a good fit
- Infertility with no clear cause, blocked tubes, or low sperm count.
- Lower egg numbers, including with age.
- Several failed IUI or IVF attempts at home.
- Couples who want embryo testing that's unaffordable at home.
Wait, or get care at home
- Thyroid, blood pressure or diabetes that isn't under control.
- Problems in the womb or tubes that need treating first.
- Surrogacy: Indian law doesn't allow it for overseas couples.
Risks
What can go wrong, and what helps
Every operation has risks, wherever it's done. These are the main ones. Your surgeon will explain how they apply to you.
The main risks
Ovarian hyperstimulation (OHSS)
A reaction to the fertility drugs that can cause swelling and pain; severe cases need treatment.
Multiple pregnancy
More likely if more than one embryo is transferred, with higher risks for mother and babies.
Egg collection risks
Bleeding or infection are uncommon but possible.
The cycle may not work
Many cycles don't lead to a pregnancy. Age is the biggest factor.
What a planned trip does about travel
- A written opinion first. A surgeon reviews your reports before you book anything, and can say no.
- Time to recover before flying. Plans include days in India after discharge, and you only fly with your surgeon's fit-to-fly letter.
- Clot prevention for the flight. Your surgeon advises on stockings, medicines and moving around. We can book aisle seats and wheelchair help.
- Records your doctor can use. Discharge summary, scans, operation notes and implant details in English, before you leave.
- Follow-up from home. Video check-ups with your surgeon, and a named person to call if something worries you.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- 1.What are your results for someone of my age, and how are they counted?
- 2.How many embryos would you transfer, and why?
- 3.What happens to any embryos we don't use?
- 4.What's included, and what costs extra (such as embryo testing or freezing)?
- 5.Who looks after me if I get OHSS after I've flown home?
Print them with our pre-travel checklist, or read how to check a hospital and surgeon yourself.

Questions
Questions about ivf & fertility treatment
Why is medication included in India and not in the US?
In the US the medicines alone can add $4,000β$7,000. The same medicines are sold for much less in India, so clinics can include them in the package.
Can overseas couples use donor eggs or a surrogate?
Surrogacy isn't allowed for overseas couples under Indian law. IVF with your own eggs and sperm is allowed. Rules on donor eggs are strict and change. We'll tell you what applies to you before you plan anything.
