When people compare a knee replacement in India cost with prices at home, they often compare only the hospital package. That’s the biggest single item, but it isn’t the whole trip. This guide lists every cost we plan for, with the ranges we use, so you can compare like with like.

All figures are planning ranges in US dollars, not quotes. They come from published hospital packages and our own cost research. The real price for your knee comes from the hospital, in writing, after a surgeon has seen your reports.

The short answer

From the US From the UK
Hospital package $2,400–$8,000 $2,400–$8,000
Return flights $1,500–$2,400 $650–$950
Stay and food, 21 days $1,155–$2,205 $1,155–$2,205
Tests, visa, insurance, transfers $490–$1,760 $490–$1,760
Our fee $500 $500
Whole trip about $6,000–$14,900 about $5,200–$13,400

The low end assumes a standard implant, a shared or standard private room and a simple recovery. The high end allows for premium implants, robot-assisted surgery, a more comfortable apartment and a buffer for the unexpected.

1. The hospital package: $2,400–$8,000

This is what you pay the hospital directly. For one knee, a package at an accredited hospital in Delhi usually includes:

  • the implant
  • about five days in hospital, with nursing and meals
  • the surgeon’s, assistant’s and anaesthetist’s fees
  • operating theatre costs and supplies
  • physiotherapy while you’re in hospital
  • medicines in hospital, including blood thinners

What moves the price: the hospital; the implant (makers such as Stryker, Zimmer Biomet and DePuy Synthes have several ranges); the room type; and whether robot-assisted surgery is used. Ask your surgeon whether robotic surgery makes a real difference for your knee before paying extra for it.

Usually not included: your stay after discharge, flights, insurance, and treatment for unrelated problems that come up.

2. Flights: $650–$2,400 return

From London it’s about nine hours non-stop, and economy returns are usually around $650–$950. From the US it’s 14–16 hours non-stop from New York and other hubs, typically $1,500–$2,400.

Book a flexible fare. Your surgeon decides when you can fly, and plans sometimes move by a few days. Long flights after leg surgery raise the risk of blood clots, so ask about an aisle seat, and follow your surgeon’s advice on stockings, blood thinners and walking around.

3. Somewhere to recover: $1,155–$2,205

After about five days in hospital, you’ll spend roughly two more weeks recovering nearby, with physiotherapy, before the final check. We plan on a serviced apartment with a lift, close to the hospital, at about $40–$80 a night, plus about $15–$25 a day for food. Over 21 days that comes to $1,155–$2,205.

If someone comes with you, they usually share the apartment, so the extra cost is mostly their flight and food.

4. Tests, visa, insurance and the small things: $490–$1,760

  • Pre-op tests: $200–$600 (X-rays, blood tests, a heart check)
  • e-Medical visa: $25–$100, depending on nationality
  • Airport transfers: $80–$160 for two
  • Local SIM: $15–$60
  • Medicines after discharge: $20–$40
  • Medical travel insurance: $150–$400 (ordinary travel insurance usually excludes trips taken for treatment)
  • A buffer for the unexpected: up to $400

5. Our fee: from $500

Our fee is fixed, separate and agreed in writing before you book anything. You pay the hospital directly; we never add to the hospital’s bill. Plans that include more support, such as nursing visits and physiotherapy where you’re staying, cost more and are itemised in your quote.

What a fair comparison looks like

If you’re comparing with home, compare the whole trip with what you’d actually pay at home. For an insured American on a high-deductible plan, that may be the out-of-pocket amount rather than the full cash price. For someone in the UK, it may be a private price, or the cost of waiting.

Also weigh the things that aren’t money: three weeks away from home, a long flight after surgery, and follow-up care that happens partly by video. For many people the trip makes sense. For some it doesn’t, and that’s a fine answer too.

Questions

How much is a knee replacement in India?

The hospital package at accredited hospitals in Delhi is usually about $2,400–$8,000 for one knee. With flights, about three weeks' accommodation, tests, visa, insurance and a coordinator's fee, the whole trip is roughly $6,000–$15,000 from the US, or about $5,200–$13,400 from the UK.

Why is the range so wide?

The hospital, the implant, the room type and whether robot-assisted surgery is used all change the package price. Your health also matters: extra tests or a longer stay cost more. A hospital can only give a firm price after reviewing your reports.

What isn't included in a hospital package?

Usually your stay after discharge, flights, travel insurance and treatment for unrelated problems. Custom implants for complex repeat surgery are also extra. A good quote lists inclusions and exclusions in writing.

How long do I need to stay in India?

Plan on about three weeks: around five days in hospital, then recovery nearby with physiotherapy until your surgeon says you're fit to fly.
